Dry Eyes and Your Tear Film

Dry eyes are a common condition many people face around the world. But, there are many reasons why you may experience symptoms.

Dry eyes typically involve your tear film and its specific ingredients. If something makes your tear film unstable, you may experience two types of dry eye:

These issues affect the ingredients of your tear film, which are:

The mucus layer is the innermost layer of your tear film, responsible for evenly spreading tears across the eyes. Mucus also keeps the rest of your tear film adhered to the eye’s surface.

The aqueous layer, produced by lacrimal glands, is the watery middle layer responsible for keeping your eyes hydrated and comfortable. Aqueous tear deficiency refers to the lack of water in your tear film.

The lipid layer is the outermost layer of the tear film. It is made of oils produced in the meibomian glands, helping seal in the watery layer, which prevents it from evaporating. Evaporative dry eye refers to the lack of oils in your tear film.

Dry Eye Causes and Symptoms

There are many different causes for this condition, including:

Some of the more common dry eye symptoms include:

  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurry vision
  • Difficulty wearing contact lenses
  • Redness
  • Watery eyes
  • A feeling of burning, stinging, or even grittiness on the surface of your eye

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction and Blepharitis

One of the most common issues we see in our patients is meibomian gland dysfunction. This condition affects your meibomian glands’ ability to produce oils for your tear film. In some cases, this can also lead to blepharitis, causing irritation, redness, or crustiness.

Leading-Edge Dry Eye Treatments

We offer a range of eye drops to manage or treat dry eye symptoms. Please contact our optometrists before using any over-the-counter products so we can ensure they are safe for you to use.

LipiFlow is an FDA-approved device that alleviates symptoms of dry eyes caused by meibomian gland dysfunction. It uses Vectored Thermal Pulsation (VTPTM) technology to heat and massage your meibomian glands, dissolving blockages.

Punctal plugs are small plugs inserted into the tear drainage system that manage the level of tears you have on your eye surface.

Blephex is a unique brushing tool used to clean the margins of your eyelids. This device is perfect for those who suffer from dry eyes caused by blepharitis or meibomian gland dysfunction.

Intense pulsed-light therapy melts blockages in your meibomian glands. The non-invasive, comfortable procedure simply uses light to heat your eyelids, providing the relief you deserve.

We offer a range of oral supplements that help alleviate dry eye symptoms. Certain nutrients found in fish oil/Omega-3 fatty acids can improve the quality of your tear film and provide the comfort you deserve.
