What is Low Vision?

Low vision refers to a, usually permanently, decreased quality of sight. Those with low vision can still see to a certain extent but may not be able to do things like drive safely, read, or tell colors apart.

Eye diseases and conditions are generally responsible for causing low vision, including:

Genetics and infections can also lead to permanent low vision.

According to the National Eye Institute, there are four common types of low vision:

  • Central vision loss, which affects your ability to read and drive
  • Peripheral vision loss, which affects how well you can see things from the corner of your eyes
  • Night blindness, which makes it difficult to see in low light situations
  • Blurry or hazy vision

Managing Low Vision

Managing low vision depends entirely on the causes of your symptoms. However, most low vision cases are permanent.

Our team may be able to help improve aspects of your vision with glasses, medications, or surgery, but we will not know for sure which would be right for you until we’ve performed a comprehensive eye exam.

What Can You Do?

Depending on your symptoms, you may need to adjust to life with low vision by:

  • Using brighter lights at home and work
  • Using magnification tools
  • Wearing specialty anti-glare lenses or sunglasses
  • Setting up your home and workspace to help you navigate safely and confidently
